President Obama announced in
September 2014 that the U.S. had begun an air campaign against ISIS in Syria. Over the next
five years, the U.S.-led coalition against ISIS conducted airstrikes on approximately 17,000
targets in Syria. U.S. ground troops first moved into Syria in 2015. Only 50 troops were initially
sent, but as U.S. involvement in the war increased, the troop count swelled to roughly 2,000.
