1898: Congress Approves US Invasion of Cuba
🇨🇺

The U.S. Congress declares that Cuba has the right to be free and independent and authorizes the President to use military force to oust Spain. The Teller Amendment adds that the United States has no “intention to exercise sovereignty, jurisdiction, or control over said Island except for the pacification thereof.” McKinley signs this declaration and sends it to Spain with the message that he will carry it out unless Spain responds satisfactorily by April 23.
